What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is a psychological and physiological state. It can cause you to feel fearful, tense or uneasy.

What Causes Anxiety?
The exact cause of Anxiety is not fully known. It can be linked to genetics, brain chemistry or environmental stresses but research is ongoing. When anxiety becomes excessive, it may fall under the classification of an anxiety disorder. First of all please visit your GP. There are a number of options available to you depending on the severity of your anxiety.

Psychological symptoms include:

  • worry
  • insomnia
  • lack of concentration
  • irritability
  • feeling uneasy
  • detached
  • loss of control.

Physical symptoms inculde:

  • Headaches, chest pains, feeling sick, dry mouth and palpataions

What can you do to help?

  • Try imagining the worst thing that could happen if you didn’t stop yourself. Do you constatly stop yourself from moving forward because you of your negative Self-talk*?
  • Challenge your thoughts. Are they realistic?
    Slow down and take some time out for yourself.
  • Do some physical exercise, a walk in the fresh air is revitalising.
  • Distract yourself. Are you anxoius when your doing something you enjoy?
  • Allow yourself to learn from mistakes. We are not perfect.
  • Use visualisation to relax you or help you feel safe and at ease.
  • Talk to someone.
  • Reward yourself and accept compliments.

*Self Talk = Our internal commentary that is either negative or positive.
